Work Permit for International Students

There are few chances for foreign students with student visas to work for a living in Malaysia.

Although students have some legal opportunities to work, the Malaysian Immigration Department has placed restrictions on how much pay foreign students are allowed to work for while they are studying there. For more information, check the rules below.

  • You are only permitted to work 20 hours per week during semester breaks only.
  • Please speak with the student visa officer at the international office if you are interested in working while you are a student at any point.
  • You must never work in an unofficial capacity because doing so could cause your student visa to be canceled.

Guidelines for part-time work

Under the circumstances outlined below, international students can have part-time jobs.

During their studies, international students can work part-time for up to 20 hours a week.

  • Festive holidays
  • Semester breaks
  • More than 7 days of holiday

International students may only work in four industries with a valid student pass, including:

  • restaurants
  • Petrol stations
  • small markets
  • and motels

They can NOT work as:

  • Cashier
  • Singers or musicians
  • Masseurs
  • Guest Relation Officers
  • Any job deemed to be immoral

Application process

1. International students who want to study in Malaysia must submit the following if they plan to work part-time in Malaysia:

  • Student’s supporting letter – a valid reason to work part time
  • a photocopy of their passport pages, including all pages
  • address, email, and contact number
  • Offer letter from the prospective employer – inclusive indication of working hours, salary and position
  • Academic Calendar
  • Supporting letter from the Dean/Head of School

2. The Immigration Department must be notified of the request to work part-time and given a chance to approve it.

3. After the student interview, university can accept or reject the application.

4. The Malaysian Immigration Department will appropriately endorse the passports of students whom could apply.
