About the British Council

The British Council language center is a British non-profit organization that promotes international cultural and educational opportunities. It works in over 100 countries to promote greater understanding of the United Kingdom and the English language, as well as to encourage cultural, scientific, technological, and educational cooperation with the United Kingdom.

The organization has been described as a soft power extension of UK foreign policy as well as a propaganda tool.

A Royal Charter governs the British Council. It is also a public corporation and an executive non-departmental public body (NDPB) sponsored by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The company’s headquarters are in Stratford, London. Stevie Spring is its Chairman, while Scott McDonald is its CEO.

History

British Council Language Center History

Through arts and culture, education, and the English language, they foster relationships, understanding, and trust between citizens of the UK and other nations.

Since 1948, they have lived in Malaysia for more than 70 years.

1934

It was decided to create the “British Committee for Relations with Other Countries.” In the same year, the word “Committee” was changed to “Council.”

1936

The title was shortened to “The British Council” by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.

1948

British Council Malaysia opened its doors to the public by setting up an office in Kuala Lumpur. In 1947, the British Council set up a South East Asia representative with headquarters in Singapore, which managed operations in the Malayan Union, British North Borneo, and Sarawak.

They founded a Malayan office in Kuala Lumpur in 1948. In September 1952, they appointed R.K. Brady as the first representative of the country and set up a regional directorate in Penang. In July 1961, they established a representative for North Borneo.

On August 31, 1963, the formation of Malaysia took place through the union of Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak, and Singapore. The British Council transformed the representations in Singapore, Sarawak, and North Borneo into regional offices, with Kuala Lumpur becoming the capital of the nation. In 1965, Malaysia expelled Singapore.

1950

They opened in Kuching.

1952

They opened in Penang.

1956

On land given to them by the Sultan of Selangor, they relocated to Jalan Bukit Aman. On May 16, 1956, in the presence of the Sultan of Selangor, Tunku Abdul Rahman, the first prime minister of Malaysia, formally opened their office.

1961

They opened in Kota Kinabalu.

1984

In Kuala Lumpur, they inaugurated the British Council Teaching Center.

2002

Their Bukit Aman office and Wisma Hang Sam teaching center were combined, and they moved to their current location in Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur, at Wisma Golden Eagle Realty.

2009

They began opening our Kuala Lumpur center seven days a week.

2010

Under a contract with the Ministry of Education, they began the English Language Teacher Development Project in East Malaysia to train and support Malaysian Primary English teachers.

2012

Under a contract with the Ministry of Education, they began the Professional Upskilling of English Instructors project in order to help Malaysian English teachers become more proficient in both their native tongue and their teaching techniques.

2014

They opened in Mutiara Damansara.
