About the University

Sunway University, one of Malaysia best universities, was founded as a University College in 2004. In January 2011, the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education upgraded it to full university status, and it became Sunway University. It is a private university in Bandar Sunway, Subang Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia and is located next to the Sunway Lagoon amusement park on a 10-hectare (24-acre) complex including academic and residential buildings.

Professor Sibrandes Poppema, the President of Sunway University, was appointed in 2021, bolstering the university’s capabilities and strategic leadership worldwide. After resigning as President of the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, Professor Poppema joined the University in 2019. Professor Poppema, a Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah Distinguished Professor, is also advising the University on creating a new medical school.

Sunway University is a world-class institution rated five stars by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency and awarded an international QS five stars for teaching, employability, and facilities. Its purpose-built campus is within Sunway City, home to the Canopy Walk connecting to the Pyramid shopping mall with easy public transportation to tourist destinations and KL International Airport, with a 350 million Ringgit investment in intelligent infrastructure.

Dedicated Student Welfare teams, BBQ and picnic spaces, air-conditioned lounges, and Wi-Fi-connected study places are offered in varoius student apartments. Students can participate in racket sports, martial arts, athletics, and the SunGym, which has a deck and juice bar overlooking the football field, as well as an Olympic-sized swimming pool and poolside café.

Sunway renowned academic team is supported by the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation through research and fellowship schemes with Harvard, Oxford, and Cambridge in order to improve teaching excellence and foster collaborations for global sustainable development.

Sunway has established international partnerships with Lancaster University in the United Kingdom for prestigious dual degree awards, Le Cordon Bleu in Paris for prestigious culinary and professional hospitality certification, and Western Michigan University in the United States for an exchange program. It provides extensive scholarships, support, and professional development coaching to all students, and all programs include internships with over 500 multinational and local companies that employ Sunway graduates and interns.

The university’s home-grown degrees in business, accounting, banking and finance, financial mathematics and statistics, economics and management, psychology, communication, computing and information systems, and biological and medical sciences have been validated by Lancaster University, and its international hospitality management and culinary management degrees have been accredited by Le Cordon Bleu. Nursing, engineering, biomedicine, actuarial studies, contemporary music (audio technology), music performance, design communication, interior architecture, global supply chain management, and international business are among the other degrees available at the university.

Education Group

The Jeffrey Cheah Foundation owns the Sunway Education Group, which includes Sunway University. From its predecessor Sunway Education Trust, which was founded in 1997, the Foundation was officially created as a registered charity in March 2010. Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah, AO, Chairman and Founder of the Sunway Group of Companies, founded it. The Foundation’s educational institutions are all non-profit, with surpluses going to student scholarships and bursaries, as well as research awards. Sunway International School, Sunway College (multiple campuses), Sunway-TES Centre for Accounting Excellence, and Monash University Sunway Campus are among the institutions that make up the Sunway Education Group.

Minimum English Language Requirements

Since all programs are taught in English, international students must demonstrate their English language competency. IELTS, TOEFL, MUET, UEC, SPM, and Sunway Intensive English Program (SIEP) results are only a few of the English proficiency tests that the institute recognizes as valid. Students who cannot provide proof of English proficiency can also take advantage of the institute’s 10-week intensive English programs to develop their language abilities.

Financial aid such as the Sunway University Community Bursary and the Sibling & Parent Alumni Discount is also available. The majority of students are also eligible for a PTPTN study loan and an EPF withdrawal.

International Partnership and Collaborations

Since 2006, Sunway University collaborates with Lancaster University in the United Kingdom, in which various degree programs are offered as dual degrees by both universities. The UK’s Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education conducted research on the partnership concept and prepared a case study on it. The university also has a partnership with Le Cordon Bleu, an international culinary training organization, which allows graduates of specific hospitality programs to acquire Le Cordon Bleu professional certificates.

Professorial fellowships have been established in perpetuity at Brasenose College, University of Oxford, and Gonville and Caius College, University of Cambridge, to foster academic links with the university, thanks to benefactions from the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation. The Jeffrey Cheah Scholars-in-Residence Program, funded by benefactors at Brasenose College and Gonville and Caius College, allows two university academics or postgraduate students to spend up to four weeks each year in Oxford and Cambridge for research or study.

Sunway University also supports Harvard Medical School‘s Southeast Asia Healthcare Leadership Program, which is part of its curriculum.

Sunway has articulation agreements with several international universities, allowing students to earn their degrees by studying part-time at Sunway and part-time at an outside university. Western Michigan University in the United States is one of the longest-running such collaborations.

In addition, IFTM (Macau Institute of Tourism Studies) in China, Meikai University in Japan and Dong-A University in South Korea are among the university international partners.
