About the University
University Science Malaysia (Universiti Sains Malaysia, in Malay) and abbreviated as USM, was founded in 1969 as country second university, was formerly known as Universiti Pulau Pinang.
USM relocated from its temporary locations at the Malayan Teachers’ Training College, Bukit Gelugor, to the current 416.6-hectare site at Minden in 1971. Minden is located roughly 9.7 kilometers from Georgetown.
USM provides courses in the social sciences, humanities, and education in addition to natural sciences, applied sciences, medical and health sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, and building science and technology.
Around 30,000 students can enroll in these at the undergraduate and graduate levels at its 17 Academic Schools on the main campus in Penang, at 6 Schools at the Engineering Campus in Nibong Tebal (about 50 km away), and at 3 Schools at the Health Campus in Kubang Kerian, Kelantan (approximately 300km from the main campus).
In addition, USM has 17 specialized research centers covering a broad range of fields, including molecular medicine, science and technology, Islamic development and management studies, policy research, and international studies.
Under the auspices of USAINS Holdings Sdn Bhd, the commercial arm of the university, it additionally offers consulting, testing, and advisory services to the industry.
To ensure that its students are multi-disciplined through their exposure to various areas of study by other Schools, USM has always used the School structure rather than the conventional Faculty system.
Given the variety of organizations and societies offered, it also encourages students to participate in extracurricular activities.
Mission and Vision
The Ministry of Higher Education of Malaysia (MOHE) designated USM to study in Malaysia as a Research Intensive University in 2007, providing both staff and students with opportunities for education and research.
The Malaysian government chose USM in 2008 as the first university in the nation to take part in the Accelerated Program for Excellence (APEX), a fast-track program that aids tertiary institutions in becoming world-class.
USM University Malaysia is one of the biggest institutions in terms of enrollment, with over 28,300 postgraduate and undergraduate students in 2009. There are approximately 1,479 professors, resulting in a student-to-lecturer ratio of about 19:1.
Enhancing Higher Education for a Sustainable Tomorrow is the vision.
The mission of USM is to enhance the socioeconomic well-being of the bottom billion people through empowering future talent and advancing transdisciplinary research.

USM campuses
Main Campus (Minden, Penang)
The largest of the five campuses, USM Main Campus is the “soul” of USM University Malaysia. Universiti Pulau Pinang, the country second university, was founded in 1969 and changed its name to USM in 1971.
Prior to that, it had been housed in temporary quarters at the Malayan Teachers’ Training College in Bukit Gelugor. Today, USM University Malaysia is located on a 416.6-hectare campus in Minden, Penang Island.
The majority of the courses it currently provides are in the arts and sciences. The Main Campus has traditionally been seen as a destination for excellent educational experiences and as a place to be seen.
Health Campus (Kubang Kerian, Kelantan)
USM Health Campus: Located in Kubang Kerian, Kelantan, on Malaysia east coast, this town is known for its chaos but also provides a variety of health courses and training for the nation’s future medical professionals. The campus opened its doors to the Hospital University Science Malaysia in June 1983. (HUSM).
Engineering Campus (Transkrian, Nibong Tebal, Penang)
On the mainland of Penang, at Transkrian, Nibong Tebal, is the USM Engineering Campus, which provides a range of engineering courses. Its location offers a serene and tranquil atmosphere that promotes high learning in a natural setting.
The building’s importance and distinctiveness are emphasized by its modern and futuristic architecture, layout, and surroundings. The fact that this campus is present makes it all the more noteworthy because it is the sole higher education facility (IPT) in this still-rural region.
Advanced Medical And Dental Institute (Bertam, Kepala Batas, Penang)
It is one of the USM core wing campuses and offers some of the greatest medical care in the north. It provides medical education and services and leads the world in new, inventive discoveries geared toward providing sustainable and comprehensive healthcare.
Its motto is “We Build and Lead Excellence.” With its many accomplishments, AMDI already stands out in the area. Its purpose is to “produce state-of-the-art advanced research, conduct innovative postgraduate programs, and supply tertiary healthcare services towards sustainable mankind.”
SAINS@KL (Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur)
The purpose of USM University Malaysia Sains@KL, formerly IPS USM@KL, was to increase USM’s physical presence and visibility in the Klang Valley. It was formally formed in 2014.
In collaboration with the Institute of Postgraduate Studies (IPS) at the USM University Malaysia main campus, Sains@KL is specifically in charge of organizing and directing a variety of cutting-edge postgraduate courses for students in the Klang Valley.
Sains@KL is ideally situated in the center of Kuala Lumpur business district and is well-equipped with physical, technical, and teaching-learning facilities like classrooms, offices, a computer lab with video conferencing capabilities, a space for students to hang out, a resource center, conference rooms, and workstations for students.
KLE Campus (Belgaum, India)
Belgaum, India’s Karnataka Lingayat Education (KLE) Campus: It is about to commemorate that pivotal day—the day “Seven Dedicated Teachers – The Saptarishis” established an Anglo-Vernacular school in Belgaum—by celebrating its centennial years.
The tenacity with which they constructed KLE in spite of numerous defeats is an impressive history in and of itself.
It is unprecedented in Indian educational history for KLE to have made the kind of transition from a school to an international program throughout the years, providing instruction in practically every field of human knowledge. USM is currently pleased to be a part of this initiative.
International Partners Collaborations 2024
Through IMCC, USM connects globally through partnerships and collaboration with institutions of higher learning all around the world, with a focus on student mobility participation.
There are already over 150 active partner universities for the exchange program with USM from all around the world!
USM collaborates with institutions through a variety of networks, including ASEAN Mobility for Students (AIMS), ASEAN University Network (AUN), Asia Pacific University Community Engagement Network (APUCEN), Erasmus, and others.
Through network agreements, all universities in the same network are considered partners, and students can choose to execute their exchange or study abroad program at the relevant institutions.
Bilateral agreements also extend USM partnerships. USM students can choose to study abroad at these colleges that have exchange agreements.
