Putra Alumni Scholarship Scheme (PASS) – International

The School of Graduate Studies (SGS) at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) is pleased to announce that the Putra Alumni Scholarship Scheme (PASS)-International is now accepting applications for the Second Semester 2023/2024, which will run from January 2 to 22, 2024.

This fellowship was established as a sort of loyalty incentive for International UPM Alumni and their offspring to attend graduate studies at UPM.

Terms and Conditions

1.Amount of scholarships offered:

  • 100 recipients for UPM alumni each year
  • 20 recipients for the offspring of UPM alumni each year

2.Type of Application:

  • Only new students registering for the second semester of 2023–2024 or UPM second semester students with “Continue” status in the second semester of 2023–2024 are eligible for this program.
  • Applications for new students must be filed either before the student is enrolled as a new one or, at the very least, during the second semester of study. The financial approval is only applicable to applications submitted after the registration period and will take effect during your second semester of study.

3.Length of the Scholarship

  • For a Master’s degree, the scholarship will cover up to two years, and for a PhD, up to three years.

4.Scholarship Amount

  • A 10% tuition fee waiver will be given to UPM alumni recipients.
  • Based on the IGSS Scheme, recipients of the tuition fee waiver program for children of UPM alumni will receive a 30–50% reduction.

5. Qualification

  • The candidate must comply with the general application prerequisites for international students.
  • Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50 and either a bachelor’s or master’s degree.
  • For research programs only, the applicant must conduct research in areas of importance that are relevant to UPM/Malaysia.
  • The candidate must not hold any employment and must not receive any other scholarships or financial aid.
  • The candidate must provide a signed copy of the study proposal from their adviser or supervisor.
  • An adviser or supervisor must write a letter of recommendation for the applicant.
  • The applicant must have at least one publication in an academic journal and/or strong endorsements from academic organizations (such as Vice Chancellor, Dean, or Director)
  • The applicant must submit a letter from their embassy confirming that they are not receiving any financial aid, scholarships, or government income.
  • Preference will be given to applications from underdeveloped nations where UPM has strategic importance; recipients must graduate on time (GOT) – this is restricted to UPM Alumni only.

Special Graduate Research Allowance Scheme (SGRA)

  1. All postgraduate research students currently enrolled full-time at UPM are eligible for this program.
  2. Students may apply for this program at any time during the semester, provided they are registered for that semester and their status is “Continue.”
  3. Each application must receive endorsement from the advisor/chairman of the supervisory committee, the head of the research project, and the dean of faculty or director of the institute where the research funding is granted.
  4. The Supervisor, Chairman, or Member of the Supervisory Committee’s research grant finances this plan. The sponsor’s terms will determine how many students this scholarship can fund.
  5. The research grant must be sufficient to cover the monthly allowance throughout the position’s duration.
  6. Candidates for this program must not be in employment or be recipients of other scholarships or financial aid.
  7. The appointment under this program becomes effective once the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) issues a formal offer letter. It is not possible to backdate the appointment date, and such requests will not be granted.

SGRA Application

  1. The following rules apply to appointments:
 Date of Application Received by SGS  Effective Date of Appointment
 Not later than the15th day of the month  From the 1st day of the current month.
 After the 15th of the month.  From the 1st day of the following month.

2. The applicant must submit an application for SGRA each semester, and the applicant’s total number of semesters cannot exceed:

Master’s: 6 semesters

PhD : 10 semesters

3. Incomplete application form will not be processed.

4. Successful candidates will receive monthly stipends in accordance with the Supervisor’s, Chairman’s, or Supervisory Committee Member’s recommendations.
The following describes the monthly maximum allowance:

  • monthly master salary of RM 1,800.00
  • RM2,300.00 per month for a PhD.

Depending on the sponsor’s guidelines, the supervisor’s permission, the size of the grant distribution, and the ceiling rate, we may consider appointing candidates for a higher monthly allowance.

5. Under this program, there will be no fee exemptions for students.

Students participating in this program are not required to help with tutoring, teaching, or demonstrations, but they must assist with research as directed by the supervisor.

Financial Assistance to Attend International Presentation

Graduate students who want to attend an overseas presentation can get financial aid from UPM.
The financial support is intended to promote high-caliber research, international networking, and student mobility among UPM postgraduate students.

Applicant Requirements

  • During the application process, the applicant must be a registered PhD student in good standing (the status is “Continue”).
  • The applicant never received financial aid under this program, and UPM did not provide any additional financial aid for outward mobility at the time of application.
  • Preference is given to the applicant who has completed less than six semesters of education.
  • The applicant must either have registered for and successfully completed a 1-credit seminar course at the faculty/institute prior to applying, or they must have attended the Putra Sarjana presenting skills seminar organized by the School of Graduate Studies, UPM.
  • Someone must invite the applicant to present orally.
  • The presentation must discuss the applicant’s PhD research project.
  • International applicants can apply only if the program operates outside their country of residence. Financial support will be granted only if the applicant attends a program hosted by a registered association, university, research institute, academic organization, or government agency.
  • It is the supervisor’s and the faculty or institution’s responsibility to check and make sure that a commercial organizer did not organize the program.

How to Make a Reimbursement Claim?

Applicants must fill out and submit the Reimbursement Claim Form no later than two months after the presentation ends.

You must deliver the form to the Institutional Relations and Financial Aid Unit at the School of Graduate Studies, along with the following documents:

  • Original receipts or other forms of payment verification, and
  • A report on the program you attended (see the report’s standards).

The following items are permitted for reimbursement:

  • Food
  • Accommodation
  • Air travel based on economy class tickets and provision of boarding pass (Malaysian Airlines or Air Asia is preferred).
  • Land travel based on provision of bus or railway tickets. Receipts must be provided for taxi fares.
  • Others (visa, travel insurance, medical treatment for minor ailments).

Fee Exemption Incentive for Sponsors Scheme (FEISS)

We are glad to announce the Fee Exemption Incentive for Sponsors Scheme as a reward program for all sponsors in an attempt to promote the UPM Postgraduate Program (FEISS).
Please read the information below for the terms and conditions to learn more about this new incentive.

Application Conditions

  • Except for Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam (JPA) and Ministries in Malaysia, this incentive is available to all national and international sponsors;
  • There cannot be an active sponsorship arrangement between the sponsors and UPM.
  • Only newly sponsored students are eligible for the incentive;
  • For a period of four (4) semesters for Masters by Research programs and six (6) semesters for PhD programs, the incentive will exempt the sponsors from paying any fees;
  • Every 11th scholar sent to continue their studies in any program at UPM will get a full tuition fee exemption from a select sponsor, provided the students have not already received a financial incentive or fee discount from UPM;
  • UPM will determine the total number of students eligible for the fee waiver based on the total number of new sponsored scholars enrolled in any two consecutive semesters.
  • If a mix of different programs (Masters in Sciences, Masters in Social Sciences, PhD in Sciences, PhD in Social Sciences) is present, the student with the lowest fee rate receives the exemption.
  • Each sponsor can sponsor a maximum of 10 students annually, and they are each eligible for full fee exemption.

OWSD PhD Fellowships

The goal of OWSD is to promote the role of distinguished women scientists in the development process and to increase their representation in scientific and technology leadership. It is the first international conference to bring together women scientists from both developing and developed nations.

For PhD study in the natural, engineering, and information technology sciences at a host institute in another developing nation in the Global South, this Fellowship is available to women scientists from STLCs.
There are two study options available to candidates: Full-Time Fellowship and Sandwich Fellowship.

Through cooperation and knowledge exchange between higher education institutions (HEIs) in Europe and Asia, the gLINK (Sustainable Green Economies through Learning, Innovation, Networking and Knowledge Exchange) project seeks to advance multidisciplinary advanced research, education, and professional training on sustainable green solutions.
Numerous scholarships are available both from the EU and from Asia to the EU.

Nine higher education institutions from Europe (from the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Hungary, and Italy) and nine from Asia make up the cooperation (Cambodia, Laos, Mongolia, Vietnam, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Thailand).

The objectives of this project are to provide education, training, research experience, and the cross-fertilization of ideas in a number of theme areas, such as:

Engineering and technology (05), education and teacher preparation (05), business studies and management science (04), agricultural sciences (01), architecture, urban and regional planning (02), medical sciences (12), and natural sciences (13)

This project will make a number of scholarships available to talented students and staff at the universities to promote European HEIs as “centers of excellence” in green thinking, teaching, research, and professional practice, and to enhance the attractiveness, image, visibility, and accessibility of European higher education and research in the participating third countries in Asia.

The Erasmus Mundus External Cooperation (EMA 2) initiative of the EU provides funding for the project.

Project Goals

The project’s goals are:

  • The project aims to strengthen and expand the cooperation network between Asia and Europe, established through numerous ongoing initiatives. It emphasizes the needs of the far-east and south-east regions for environmentally benign and sustainable economic development.
  • To support the development of new centers of excellence with the goal of encouraging high-quality research and practice among the participating HEI institutions in Asian and European nations with a clear European value.
  • Improve education, teaching, research, and management capabilities in the fields of agricultural sciences, architecture, urban and regional planning, business studies and management science, education and teacher preparation, engineering and technology, medical sciences, and social sciences in participating institutions.
  • To create a pool of qualified men and women through the movement of gifted students in Asian nations who have the international experience and skill sets required for the present job market.
  • To promote HEIs as “centres of excellence” in participating Asian countries, increasing the visibility and allure of education and research infrastructure in the EU.
  •  To conduct research on the most crucial challenges facing the participating nations, especially those relating to environmentally friendly manufacturing, sustainable energy systems, green communications, green urban areas, green transportation and distribution, etc.
  •  To stimulate knowledge transfer, the sharing of expertise, the recognition of study and research programs, and reciprocal access to HEIs in Asia and the EU.

EU-funded gLINK

The EU-funded gLINK project is accepting applications for the following scholarships at partner universities throughout the EU.

  • 10 month undergraduate program (will cover return travel expenses, insurance, monthly 1000 Euro living expenses and bench fee)
  • During ten months, a master’s (will cover return travel expenses, insurance, monthly 1000 Euro living expenses and bench fee)
  • for 10–12 months, a PhD (will cover return travel expenses, insurance, monthly 1500 Euro living expenses and bench fee)
  • 10 month post-doc (will cover return travel expenses, insurance, monthly 1800 Euro living expenses and bench fee – if applicable)
  • faculty for one month (will cover return travel expenses, insurance, 2500 Euro living expenses)

You must hold an affiliation with a university in one of the Asian Lot 5 nations. The countries include Cambodia, Myanmar, Mongolia, Vietnam, Laos, Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Maldives, Philippines, Thailand, China, North Korea. The scholarships offered for movement from the EU to Asia include the following types.

Queen Elizabeth Commonwealth Scholarships

There are 20 fully financed master’s scholarships offered by member institutions in 12 Commonwealth nations.
The scholarships are also available for Masters degrees in Bangladesh, eSwatini, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius. It includes Pakistan, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, the West Indies, Zambia, and the Philippines, in addition to Malaysia.
