Background

One of the research institutes of UPM was founded in November 1999 and is called the Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ION2).

It was formerly known as the Institute of Advanced Technology. With an emphasis on the specialized fields of Nano-scale green synthesis and applications, ION2 creates research facilities in the fields of nanotechnology and advanced materials.

Along with sharing research results, knowledge, and resources with other research and industrial communities throughout the world, we also teach the next generation of research leaders.

Their founding purpose was to pioneer research and development in cutting-edge fields of engineering, information technology, and physical sciences.

To make sure the institute stays competitive and in pace with recent advancements in research, they have undergone a number of reorganization phases. They have concentrated on advanced materials-based research and nanotechnology since 2012.

ION2

On 1 November 2021, they changed the institute’s name to the Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology after 22 years of operation (ION2). The institute gained strength and awareness with the rebranding to ION2.

With a focus on the specialized fields of nano-scale green synthesis and applications, they hope to become one of the top research centers of excellence in the fields of nanotechnology and advanced materials.

ION2 promotes the use of sustainable and eco-friendly research and development methods. This is done to satisfy the demands of society and business in the future, especially those of the Industrial Revolution 5.0 (IR5.0) and Society 5.0.

ION2 also highlights accomplishments that promote the 10-10 framework for Malaysian science, technology, innovation, and economy (MySTIE) and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This reduces reliance on foreign technology while ensuring that research and technological advancements keep up with the country’s economy.

As part of the Innohub program, ION2 researchers have now successfully sold their goods in partnership with Putra Science Park.

Organic conductive pastes for printable circuits, Nanoderm technology for the treatment of oil palm illnesses, copper-removing water filters, and photosynthesis enhancers employing carbon dots are some of its products.

The Institute consistently backs UPM’s initiatives to support technopreneurs who can create new, cutting-edge technologies and market-ready innovations.

In addition to R&D, ION2 also engages in other important activities, such as networking with business and the community, teaching future research leaders through postgraduate programs (Master and Doctor of Philosophy), and sharing knowledge through publications, workshops, and seminars.

We also provide testing and calibration services, and one of our laboratories has received MS ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation for its work.

Networking with businesses

Networking with businesses and the community is one of the key activities ION2 engages in outside of research and development.

By forging meaningful connections with industry partners, the institution ensures that its research efforts are aligned with the needs of the market. This approach allows the organization to contribute meaningfully to solving real-world problems and helps maintain a proactive stance in anticipating future challenges.

Furthermore, these relationships foster an exchange of ideas, resources, and insights that can lead to innovative solutions and mutually beneficial collaborations.

Investing in the education and training of future research leaders is another core activity at ION2. The institution offers both Master and Doctor of Philosophy postgraduate programs, creating a robust and inclusive learning environment that nurtures the next generation of researchers.

These programs provide students with the opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals, exposing them to real-world challenges and the latest methodologies in their field.

This hands-on learning experience is invaluable in shaping well-rounded, skilled professionals capable of leading future research efforts.

ION2 actively shares knowledge through various means such as publications, workshops, and seminars. This sharing of findings and expertise cultivates a culture of learning and collaboration, both within and beyond the institution’s boundaries.

Moreover, ION2 offers top-quality testing and calibration services. The fact that one of its laboratories has accreditation from MS ISO/IEC 17025 testifies to the high standards it upholds.

This accreditation affirms the institution’s commitment to providing dependable and precise services, further strengthening its status as a credible and trusted entity in the research and development field.
