Over 30 years ago, the Department of Library and Information Science (DLIS) was at the forefront of research in the information area.

Although the department has been a part of University Malaya (UM) since 1992, it will join the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences (FASS) in June 2021, making it the youngest department in FASS.

DLIS is a growing community of students, educators, and researchers committed to learning and developing the subject of information through innovative research and education.

The Master of Information Science (Library Science) Program is aimed to generate graduates with a thorough understanding of library and information science theory and practice.

Master of information science tuition fees for academic year 2023-2024 is 35,600 Ringgit for research mode and 31,900 for coursework.

Program Structure

Core Courses

Organization of Information: This course delves into the processes and systems that organize and classify information.

It examines the theories, principles, and practices behind cataloguing, classification, metadata, indexing, and thesauri.

By understanding these concepts, students can effectively manage, retrieve, and disseminate information in library and information science environments.

Reference and Information Literacy Services: This course explores the tools, resources, and strategies used in reference and information literacy services.

Students learn how to assist library users in identifying, locating, evaluating, and using information effectively. The course also emphasizes the critical role of information literacy in today’s digital age.

Technologies for Information Management: In this course, students examine the role of technologies in managing and disseminating information.

Topics covered include database management systems, content management systems, and other digital tools used in library and information science. It aims to equip students with the technical skills necessary for effective information management.

Research Methods in Library and Information Science: This course introduces students to the different research methods used in the field of library and information science.

It covers qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods research, teaching students how to formulate research questions, design research studies, collect and analyze data, and interpret and present results.

Dissertation: The dissertation course allows students to apply the knowledge and skills they’ve gained throughout their studies. Under the guidance of a faculty advisor, students choose a topic related to library and information science, conduct in-depth research, and write a comprehensive report.

This course provides students with the opportunity to contribute original research to the field.

This curriculum offers students with the skills necessary to nurture and succeed in research and innovation in a range of information contexts.

Program Structure

The Master of Information Science Program culminates in a thesis. Applicants must complete a course in research methodology during their first year of study.

The requirement to complete a course in research methodology is designed to equip students with essential skills for conducting their thesis.

These skills encompass various research methods, data collection and analysis, ethical considerations, and academic writing.

Understanding research methodology is fundamental for producing high-quality, reliable, and valid research. Moreover, students are taught how to approach a research problem systematically.

In the subsequent stages of the program, students will be required to apply the knowledge they have gained from the research methodology course directly into their thesis.

Here, they will have an opportunity to explore a topic of their interest in-depth, under the guidance of a faculty member. The completion of the thesis is not merely a program requirement; it also represents a substantial contribution to the field of information science.

This process equips students with skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and independent learning.
