Bachelor of Chemical Engineering

The area of chemical engineering is rapidly growing on a global scale. The need for carrying out tasks that chemists and mechanical engineers are unable to complete considerably necessitates competence.

This discipline has developed and now includes many engineering-related topics, including the design of systems and the processing of agricultural products, petroleum and petrochemicals, polymers, medicines, biofuel, and other substances.

Chemical engineering knowledge is even more essential in the current state of the globe, where resources are scarce and sustainable growth is a huge obstacle. UTM chemical engineering  program consists of four main topics in addition to the key disciplines of science, mathematics, humanities, and basic engineering.

Matriculation or STPM with a minimum of B- in Mathematics/ Additional Mathematics/ Further Additional Mathematics, Chemistry/ Engineering Chemistry, and Physics/ Engineering Physics/ Biology with CPA 3.00 and not physically handicapped which makes him/her unable to conduct experimental/ practical work.

Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical BioProcess)

Biotechnology and natural product research are being translated into industrial settings through the engineering discipline of bioprocess engineering in order to power the existing and upcoming global economic powerhouses.

The design, development, and evaluation of processes that use biologically based materials (such as animals, plants, and microbes) to produce goods in this curriculum makes use of a variety of engineering principles, particularly those relating to chemical and bioprocesses.

Students will gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge technology during four years of rigorous instruction and industrial exposure, paving the way for careers in professional bioprocess engineering.

The graduates will have a strong foundation in mathematically based engineering analysis, enabling them to explain the physical, biological, and chemical processes of complex biological systems and design processes that will result in products that could generate wealth, promote health, and promote sustainability.

You can apply for UTM University Scholarship if you are eligible.

Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical-Gas)

The profession known as “Gas Engineering” encompasses gas processing, pipeline transmission and distribution, and gas use. To benefit humanity, it’s essential to execute project management, project supervision, research, and process design and installation activities safely and effectively.

Malaysia, with its 84.9 trillion cubic feet of gas reserves expected to last around 60 years, requires skilled personnel in the field of gas engineering. This positions Malaysia as number 16 in terms of global gas reserves. The first Gas Processing Plant in Terengganu, Peninsular Malaysia, started operations in 1984.

Master of Engineering in Chemical

Candidates have the chance to improve their technical expertise in cutting-edge chemical engineering domains through this program. Any bachelor’s degree holder with relevant experience from a discipline other than science, technology, or engineering is qualified to enroll in this program.

The Master of Engineering (Chemical) program operates full-time at the UTM Main Campus in Johor Bahru, allowing study durations from one and a half (1.5) years to a maximum of four (4) years.

This program welcomes any bachelor’s degree holder who has completed engineering, technology, or scientific courses. It also invites graduates from various fields with appropriate work experience to apply.

Depending on the candidate’s background, they might need to take pre-requisite courses to understand more advanced, in-depth courses.

The course operates full-time, following a two-semester academic year. Usually, students need to enroll in three (3) to fifteen (15) credit hour courses per semester. The assessment draws from the dissertation project, final exams, and coursework completed throughout the semester.

Eligibility

  • The candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from University Technology Malaysia or another institution of higher learning that has been approved by the Senate and a cumulative point average (CPA) of at least 2.75/4.0 or an equivalent. When the CPA falls between 2.74 and 2.50, it is rigorously evaluated internally. While five years of professional experience in a similar field are necessary for CPAs with a 2.49 to 2.0 range.
  • Candidates with other bachelor’s degrees in engineering or science from universities approved by the Senate who have a GPA of 2.75 out of 4.0 may also apply, but they must pass all of the following courses:
    Weight balance
    – Engineering Chemical Reactions
    – Chemistry-Related Thermodynamics
    – Numerical Techniques
    – Unit Operations and Transport Processes

UTM Chemical Engineering Career Opportunities

UTM Chemical Engineering is well-known for providing its students with vast opportunities to connect with the industry, significantly enhancing their educational experience and career prospects.

The department has established strong linkages with leading companies and organizations in the chemical engineering field, facilitating a seamless bridge between academic learning and practical application.

These partnerships not only offer students hands-on experience through internships and industrial training but also enable them to participate in cooperative education programs.

Such programs allow students to work in the industry as part of their curriculum, gaining valuable work experience and earning academic credits simultaneously.

Furthermore, these industry connections often lead to collaborative research projects, guest lectures, and workshops led by industry experts, keeping students abreast of the latest technologies and trends in chemical engineering.

By engaging directly with professionals and companies, students are better prepared for their future careers, equipped with real-world skills and a deeper understanding of industry demands.

These initiatives also frequently result in job placements, as companies are inclined to hire graduates who have already demonstrated their capabilities through internships and project collaborations during their studies at UTM.
