University Technology Malaysia provides accommodations in Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur. UTM accommodations are in types of on-campus and off-campus for both local and international students.

UTM hostels are furnished and well-equipped. Furthermore, we provide average cost of  living and types of food in Malaysia. Term and conditions of using these accommodations will also be provided.

The Student Affairs Office at UTM University, Malaysia, provides an array of housing solutions to cater to the diverse needs of their student community.

In total, they offer 301 housing units tailored for students who wish to reside with their spouses and children while pursuing their education at UTM.

Additionally, UTM has 10 residential colleges available, with the capacity to accommodate up to 14,774 students for a single academic session.

Students have the flexibility to choose from two distinct housing options. One option is a cozy apartment, available in either a two- or three-room configuration. Alternatively, there is the choice of a spacious two-room townhouse.

To ensure the utmost convenience for our students, each living unit is thoughtfully equipped with standard amenities, including furnishings and refrigerators.

For all full-time undergraduate students, the option to apply for on-campus housing is open, guaranteeing a convenient and enriching university experience.

In the case of new international postgraduate students who are single, we allocate on-campus accommodations to ensure a smooth transition to university life.

It’s important to note that on-campus housing for families with children is subject to availability, given the limited number of options. They try to accommodate families to the best of our ability within the constraints of availability.

Accommodation in UTM Johor Bahru

UTM University provides on-campus accommodation for more than 12,000 students in its 10 residential colleges and 301 family housing units for students to bring along their spouse and children.

There are two types of housing available for the students. One of which is the apartment type (a-two-room and a-three-room apartment) and the other is the town house with two rooms.

Each housing unit furnished with basic facilities such as furniture and refrigerator for the students’ convenience. All residential colleges are equipped with cafeteria, multipurpose hall, minim arts, laundry services, sport facilities, guest rooms and leisure rooms.

The rental rates for UTM hostels vary from MYR300 to MYR600 per month, while the housing rental rates vary from MYR480 to MYR1,100 per month.

On-campus Accommodation

International students will be offered to stay on-campus accommodation (UTM Johor Bahru). Student can choose a single/double room with share bathroom (type of room is subject to availability).

Each room equipped with basic furniture. Each room is furnished with a bed, a mattress, study desk, a chair, study lamp, cupboard, fan, trash can and clothes hangers.

Shared equipment such as iron, ironing board, electric kettle and hot & cold water dispenser to each residential block will be provided for students’ convenience.

Each residential college has an administrative complex which consists of an Administration Office, Computer Lab, Committee Room, Students’ Activity Center, prayer hall and a Cafeteria.

In order to be in tandem with the development of sports and recreation among students, the university provides each residential college with tennis court, multipurpose court for volley ball, futsal, basketball, netball; mini field and indoor games.

Accommodation in UTM KL

UTMKL are keen to ensure the campus environment meet the standard and expectations of students, staff and visitors. It providing accredited and high-end labs, fast and reliable internet connectivity, library, student workspace, comfortable mosque and few choices of café.

UTMKL currently has one residential college (Kolej Siswa Jaya), approximately 10 minutes driving from campus which can accommodate about 2,500 students, almost all are reserved for undergraduate and postgraduate students.

In addition, there are about 40 rooms available in the Business and Advanced Technology Centre (BATC), located within the campus. Alternative off-campus private accommodations are quite easily available in the nearby area.

Accommodation Facilities

Accommodation Room

To ensure that the students are comfortable living in the college, the university has made the effort to provide a wide range of room for the students to choose.

The rooms are stated as follows: Executive Room, Single Room with attached bathroom, Standard Room, Double Room, Double Room with balcony and Family Housing Unit.

Basic Furniture

Each room is furnished with a bed, a mattress, study desk, a chair, study lamp, cupboard, fan, dustbin and clothes hangers.

Shared Equipment

The university also supplies iron, ironing board, electric kettle and hot & cold water dispenser to each residential block for students’ convenience.

Sports Court, Multi-station Equipment

In order to be in tandem with the  development of  sports and recreation  among students, the university provides each residential college  with tennis court, multi- purpose court for volley ball, takraw, basketball, netball; mini field and indoor games.

Scenic Landscape

The preserved landscape is rich with variety of local trees such as cengal, meranti, resak, merbau and others so as to enrich their knowledge of our flora and fauna and to create awareness towards the importance of preserving nature.

Administrative Complex

Each residential college has one administrative complex which consists of College Office, Computer Lab, Committee Room, Students’ Activity Centre and a Cafeteria.

Principal’s and Fellow’s Residence

Both residence are built nearby and attached to students’ residential block. The reason is to strengthen the family-like relation among the principal, the fellow and the students.

Such a practice will help both the principal and the fellow to manage the students’ welfare.

Students’ Lounge

Each residence hall is provided with ample lounges for kicking back and watching TV. The lounge is furnished with settee, newspapers, magazines, television and ASTRO.

Landscape/Garbage/Sanitary Bin Cleaning Services

The appointed contractors are responsible for  the cleaning job inside and outside the premises. This includes foyer, toilets, prayer rooms, hall and around the office complex.

In addition, garbage collector and sanitary bin cleaning contractors are also present to ensure that the residents are living in a clean and comfy environment.

The appointed contractors are also responsible in  cleaning the surrounding area, mowing the lawn, watering and fertilizing the trees,  planting new trees and maintaining the landscape.

Cafeteria/Food Arcade

The university provides each residential college with a cafeteria and food arcade that prepares food  and drinks. The cafeteria and the arcade operate between 7.00 am till 12 midnight.

UTM Students can do their assignments and surf the internet in the air-conditioned computer lab.

Students’ Common Room

Students have the opportunity to run the programs or activities such as  seminars in the common room that can be found in all residential colleges.

The Common Room consists of two units Multi-purpose Hall, Counseling Room, Meeting Room, Committee Room and Study Room.

Transportation Services

There are 20 private buses and 8 university buses for return trips to lectures in the campus. These services operate between 7.15 a.m. and 11.30 p.m. for the convenience of the students. Bus services to Taman University are provided only on Saturdays and Sundays.

The University Shuttle Service operates bus service from 7.15am. – 11.30 pm throughout the academic year (except during public holiday) providing safe, convenient transportation throughout the Skudai Campus. All services are funded by a semester fee paid by students.

Other Facilities

Other facilities that can be found in the colleges are store room for keeping the students’ belonging during semester break, stationery shop, book shop, public phones, telecommunication shop, parking lot and gazebos.

Rates and Cost of Living

The cost of living for international students studying at UTM Johor Bahru is reasonably low compared to international standards, and can vary from USD200–USD400 a month depending on individual needs and lifestyle (assuming single, excluding accommodation and transport).

UTM provide bus services within the campus. All  the necessary  facilities  and  amenities  are  readily  available  within  the  campus  and  its vicinity for the convenience of the students.

Your spending patterns may be different from depending on your preferences and lifestyle. It can be difficult to estimate how much you are likely to spend as a student until you have settled down for a period of time.

As such, it is important to ensure that you have sufficient finance to support both your living expenses and tuition fees throughout the duration of studies.

Cost of Living

The cost of living in Malaysia is lower than most developing countries. The overall expenses of living in campus for a single student are estimated between MYR1,000-MYR1,500 per person per month (USD241-USD362). This includes room, books, food, personal expenditure and travel within Johor Bahru. Cost will be vary depending on personal requirement and lifestyle.
