Sunway Master of Medical Science is a research-based program for students who have completed a bachelor’s degree in medical science or a related discipline and want to advance their research abilities.
This program, offered in the dynamic and diverse setting of Malaysia, is a great chance to work on advanced research projects, learn from experienced professionals, and prepare for a successful career in the global medical science field.
Program Review
Sunway Master of Medical Science is the study of the biological systems underlying the function of the human body, with an emphasis on illness diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. Medical science research covers a wide range of topics, from fundamental biology to cancer; chemistry to pharmacology; and physics to radiation.
Intakes | Duration |
Rolling Intake | 2 Years (full-time) 3 Years (part-time) |
In accordance with the department’s objective and vision, they do research in four major areas:
Diseases
Improve illness knowledge and understanding of the underlying causes, biological mechanisms, and genes involved in disease. This fundamental understanding of illness may subsequently be applied to the development of diagnostic techniques.
Therapy and Cures
To investigate the utilization of current technology or natural resources in the treatment of illnesses and other medical difficulties. This covers “proof of concept” investigations as well as prototyping methods.
Epidemiology
Determine the pattern of illness distribution and impacts in the community so that disease can be avoided in the future. Observational studies may be used to examine distributions, whereas analytical studies can be used to evaluate illness impacts.
Sustainable Well-being
To improve human health and, as a result, life enjoyment for people of all ages. Sunway assesses, analyzes, and manages well-being in the face of uncertainty, including ageing, nutrition, climate change, physical, mental, and social health.
Program Structure
All research students of Sunway Master of Medical Science are required to undertake two modules. The two modules are as listed below:
Clinical Research Methodology
This is a taught course, and students must pass it before beginning the project. Students will be assigned a supervisor who is a member of the academic faculty with research competence in the student’s field of study.
Thesis
Students are expected to submit their Master’s thesis for assessment and defend their thesis at the end of their study.
Areas of Research
The School has a dedicated team of Supervisors with expertise in areas of research including (but not limited to):
- Aging and Geriatrics: This is about understanding older people’s health. Students learn how to take care of the aging population.
- Eco-health: Here, students learn how the environment affects our health. They study how to keep both the planet and people healthy.
- Non-communicable Diseases: This area focuses on diseases that do not spread from person to person, like heart disease and diabetes. Students learn how to prevent and treat these diseases.
- Public Health and Organizational Health: Students learn how to improve health care systems and policies. They study ways to keep communities healthy.
- Cardiovascular Research: This is all about the heart and blood vessels. Students explore how to prevent and treat heart problems.
- Genomics and Precision Medicine: In this exciting field, students use genetics to create personalized medicine. They learn how to treat patients based on their unique genes.
- Oncology: This area deals with cancer. Students learn about cancer treatments and research.
- Communicable Diseases: Here, the focus is on diseases that can spread from one person to another, like COVID-19. Students learn how to control and prevent these diseases.
- Neuroscience: This is the study of the brain and nerves. Students explore how to treat brain and nerve diseases.
- Pharmacy: This field teaches students about medicines – how they are made, how they work, and how to use them safely.
