To facilitate a smooth shift from elementary to high school, the Student-Centered Middle School Program at SIS diligently maintains a combination of academic challenges and nurturing creativity. Their program places a significant emphasis on cultivating essential skills, including proficiency in reading, numeracy, and various learning skills.

According to the Ontario curriculum in Canada, educators use the coursework that students complete throughout the entire semester to evaluate them.

Assessment results give teachers insight into where their students stand in relation to meeting curricular standards, and they enable teachers to support students with alternate learning strategies as they work to meet their learning goals.

Middle School Development Focus

  • SIS teachers use a variety of in-class and extracurricular activities to create effective learning opportunities. They challenge students to think critically and creatively while teaching them how to tackle real-world challenges.
  • SIS teachers introduce projects and coursework, allowing students to practice working both independently and in groups.SIS teachers encourage students to take ownership of their education and provide instruction on actively seeking out new learning opportunities and resources.
  • All throughout the semester, there are assessments. This enables learning to be consistent, ongoing, and cumulative. Ongoing assessments help students stay informed about their academic obligations.
  • For students from other schools or systems of education, SIS offers additional support.
    Teachers explain to students the value of responsibility, organization, autonomous work, teamwork, initiative, and self-regulation as well as other necessary learning skills and work habits.

Middle School Subjects

Following Canada’s Ontario curriculum, subjects are classified as Core or Elective.

Students in grades 6–8 study four main subjects: mathematics, English, the arts, and social studies. These topics are taught by the homeroom teacher, who uses inter-disciplinary (cross-curricular) teaching methods across all subject areas. Furthermore, the classroom teacher can concentrate on each student’s strengths and learning requirements.

In addition to the core topics, the rotational subjects include languages (French, Mandarin, Malay), science, health, and physical education. Many subjects are taught by experts in the field.

English- Literacy Focus

Students’ literacy skills include more than simply reading and writing; they also learn how to communicate in society. Students learn how to use the English language effectively, think critically, and connect meaningfully with individuals and communities as they prepare for the future at school.

Mathematics- Numeracy Focus

Mathematics in middle school expands beyond numerical abilities. Students learn how to apply their knowledge and skills in many topic areas. Students will learn transferable abilities that may be applied in real-world circumstances, which is consistent with STEM education.

Science and technology

Science and technology require more than just knowing textbook topics. Students learn to apply what they learn to society and the environment, as well as build the abilities, techniques, and mental habits essential for scientific investigation and technical problem solving.

Social Studies-History, Geography

Students’ knowledge, understanding, and attitudes in social studies, history, and geography will help them grow into knowledgeable citizens who appreciate a community that is welcoming. The program is designed to provide students with the abilities necessary to solve issues and convey ideas, decisions, and thoughts about practical developments and events.
